Huckleberry Finn- Chapters 9-12

In Chapter 9, Huck and Jim found a cavern on the island to stay in so no one would find them and because Jim knew it was going to rain that evening. The cavern was huge and Jim set traps up all around it. That night it rained and rained and the river begun to rise around three or four feet high. The next couple night they began to catch driftwood that floated throughout the river from the rain. One night they took the canoe out and explored down the river. They stumbled upon a deserted house and became curious as to what was in it. Jim spotted a man inside and when he went inside to check the place out, the man was dead from a gunshot wound. The house looked like the people just left in a hurry and left all their belongings there. Huck and Jim took advantage of all of the things there and loaded up their canoe with everything they would possibly need that they took from the house and made it home safely.

In Chapter 10, Huck really wanted to know about the dead man they had seen in the house the night before. Jim was way more superstitious than Huck and said was bad luck to talk about him because he would come and haunt them. Huck happened to find eight dollars sewn into one of the pockets of the coats that they had stolen and believed that they were having good luck. Well at the end of the week, Huck was going back to the cavern when he spotted a snake and killed it in the cavern. He played a little joke on Jim and put the dead snake in his bed. With Huck’s forgetfulness, the mate of the dead snake was in Jim’s bed as well and bit Jim on the ankle that night when he got in bed. Jim’s leg and foot swelled up for about four days and finally went back down. Huck and Jim went fishing one afternoon and caught a catfish that was six foot long. They started to become curious as to what was going on in town so that night, Huck dressed up as a girl with the things they stole from that house and went into town. He came upon an old house and a woman living inside of it that did not look familiar. He knew she would probably not recognize him and would tell him all he needed to know.

In Chapter 11, Huck is trying his best to disguise himself as a girl to fool the lady so she won’t figure out who he is and tell on him. Huck was only there for one reason and finally he got her to tell him the story of “Huck Finn’s death.” There was a lot of gossip going around all over town from saying that his own father killed him to saying that Jim killed him because the both went missing the night Huck was “murdered.” There was even a three hundred dollar reward for Jim if he was found. Then the lady went on to say that her husband was going to go and hunt for him on Jackson’s Island because they figured he might would go there since it was a deserted island. Of course Huck started to freak out but he couldn’t show it and finally the lady confessed that she knew that Huck wasn’t a girl for him to tell her his real name and his story. Huck most definitely couldn’t tell her the truth so he made up and story and a name to go along with it. But he included in there that was at the “wrong” town and he needed to get there before dawn, which was a really good excuse for him to leave to get to Jim. As soon as Huck left the house he got back to Jackson Island as soon as he could and woke Jim up. They packed all their things from the cavern and headed out without speaking one word.

In Chapter 12, Huck tells us about the adventures of him and Jim sailing down the river toward the states. Every now and then Huck would sneak out at night time when they were near little towns and gather a little bit of food worth around ten or fifteen cents. When they didn’t float down the river, Jim would set up campground with the supplies that they had and they would stay ashore until the following morning. By this time they had reached St. Louis and were getting closer to where more people would be interacting. Jim and Huck stumbled upon a wrecked ship and Huck was eager to go aboard and see what things they could take. Jim was really scared but he went anyways and as soon as they got on it they heard voices and Jim took off. Huck wasn’t about to back down because the whole time he could only think of what Tom would do. He overheard two mean talking about killing the third man that was tied up on the floor underneath their feet. They were afraid he was going to tell on them so they were trying to find a way to kill him. One of the men thought it was wrong to kill him so they were going to abandon the ship, hoping he would drown when it split apart, but Huck had another plan. He was going to take their boat too and they would all be in trouble and unable to leave the ship.

In this chapter some of the things Jim said was really hard to translate into English. Also, what were the two men afraid the other man was going to tell on them for? I think I read over that part and didn’t catch onto it.
