The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn- Chapters 1-4

In Chapter One, Huckleberry begins to tell us about how he and Tom had found a fortune of money and the Judge took it and put it up for interest and decided to give them a dollar a day a piece. Huckleberry lived with a widow and she also housed a lady by the name of Mrs. Winston. Huckleberry tried to run away but Tom, his best friend, eventually found him and told him he needed to go back home. Mrs. Winston and the widow tend to get on Huckleberry's nerves a lot by always picking at him and trying to make him a well-behaved gentlemen, which didn't work. I also noticed how superstitious Huckleberry is when he freaks out of killing the spider that landed on the burning candle. It came as a surprise to me and I didn't really understand why he was bothered by it.
In Chapter 2, Huckleberry sneaks out at night and meets up with his best friend, Tom. Huckleberry made the mistake of startling Jim, Mrs. Winston's worker, when trying to escape and they had to hide from him for a while until he fell asleep. Tom decided once they had gotten away to mess with Jim for when he woke up. He moved his hat to the limb on the tree and when Jim woke up he exaggerated the story and had everyone in town believing crazy stuff. We are introduced to Huckleberry's friends, Jo Harper and Ben Rogers, who decide to make a gang and be "killers and robbers." When reading the things that Tom said he saw when they went on his adventures really reminded me of things that my younger brother and cousins would do.
In Chapter 3, we learn that Huckleberry isn't really involved in the whole religion thing that his town is mainly consisting of. He also tells us that he hasn't seen his dad in a while and he doesn't wish to see him because his dad was really abusive to him when he was younger. The people in the town found a dead body in the river and everyone believed it to be Huckleberry's dad, but he didn't think it was him because the body was found faced up and dead people drown face down. Huckleberry and his "gang" went on one of their missions and it turned out as something they weren't interested in continuing. Tom was the only one who seemed to find excitement in this. Tom seemed to have a really good imagination and would get aggravated with Huckleberry if he couldn't picture the same things as him. After that day the "gang" split up.
In Chapter 4, Huckleberry becomes accustomed to living with the widow and gets used to the way she acts. When wandering around one day, Huckleberry found a footprint in the dirt and noticed that in the left heel there was a cross in it with big nails. That only meant one thing to Huckleberry..his dad was back. Huckleberry goes to see the Judge and tells him he doesn't want his share of the money that he and Tom found. He returns home still dumbfounded at the sight of the footprint and asks Jim to predict his fortune with his hairball that he performed magic with. Jim finally come up with the conclusion that he Huckleberry's father did not know what he was going to do but that Huckleberry was going to meet two women, a poor one and a rich one. He said that he was going to marry the poor one first and then the rich one later on, but for him to stay away from water because if he got behind in his debt then he would be hung. Huckleberry returns upstairs to his room and to his astonishment after he lights the candle, there sits his father.

When I began to read this book I quickly picked up on the accent that Huckleberry had. He has a very country dialect and it took me a little while to get accustomed to reading it and interpreting what he meant. In the first chapter I still don't understand why Huckleberry was so freaked out of killing the spider?

  1. The spider is an example of Huck's belief in superstition. He thinks that killing the spider will bring bad luck, and so he takes steps to cancel out the bad luck, like crossing his chest three times. Twain is using Huck and Jim's superstitions to make a point. What do you think it might be?

  2. I just got done reading this same section! I agree that the accent that Huck has! I think that although in the beginning he hasn't been schooled yet that he is a clever and smart young man. I think it'll be interesting to see the kinds of situations he'll get into!

  3. I think the point might be maybe to show how people were back then with their superstitions. Like in society today there are things that people are superstitious about like seeing a black cat walk out in front of you, walking under ladders, breaking mirrors, or even walking under the Cupola in the middle of campus.

I agree Mary Kate, maybe Huck was just really hard to understand but as the story kept going and he was in school, it made his accent easier to comprehend! Yes I am very excited to see what happens throughout the book!
